Message from the Chairman

We are now in the time of great change in many different fields.
Without doubt the IT revolution is a prime example of these wide ranging changes, changes resulting from a transformation in our way of thinking and triggered by new innovations based on the concept of "an object = tool".
In our present paper distribution industry, the improvement of tools and our new approaches are irreversibly linked; I think we have now reached the time when it is necessary to change certain aspects of our industry to prepare ourselves for a new future.
For strengthening and streamlining the structure of our companies,
I think we should pursue a more dynamic and effective way of working in each company, by reducing waste caused by such practices as duplicated work and investment.
Recently there has been a particular emphasis on the globalization of Japanese corporations. We have now entered an era in which we should pay attention to not only Japan, but also overseas. In this era of increasing globalization, two companies, Kokusai Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. and Hattori Paper & Board Ltd. _ have taken a hard look at the future of the paper distribution industry and have decided to merge on October 1st under the name of Kokusai Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. Kokusai means international and is an appropriate name for the new company; the merger ensures a strong base for internationalization and globalization.
In the worldwide pulp and paper industry, Asia, especially East Asia, is becoming the main stage for both production and sales; accordingly the role of Japan in Asia is becoming increasingly important.
Free market economies are spreading all over the world and overcoming the differences in the social systems of each country; this means free economy is becoming the common language of our world. In other words, in terms of the market economy, the world is becoming one and globalization is broadening the possibilities for business opportunities.
It is my desire that in the future, by enhancing and expanding our basic functions and creating new ones, our paper distribution industry will firmly establish a reputation for reliability from both at home and abroad. Our new businesses will be vital and vigorous companies able to make a full contribution to society.
I sincerely look forward to your continuing advice and encouragement in the future.

Kokusai Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. Chaiman and CEO Akira Suzuki
